In fifth grade, I had the chance to write an essay about why it would be a great opportunity to be able to go to the 2009 Inauguration of President Barack Obama. I was one of the four students selected to go to Washington, DC for the Inauguration. I’ve made a great transition into high school by staying focused just like the YESICAN volunteers always remind me. I also made the Honor Roll more than once. YESICAN has improved my life in so many different ways.”

“Little did I know in 2004 that when our church leadership agreed to provide use of our building free of charge and contribute $750 for supplies that this all-volunteer program would grow to help so many children and adults to go college and get jobs. Parents and grandparents, including my wife and me, have attended the information sessions and chaperoned college tours and cultural events so that we can learn more to help our own children and grandchildren, as well as those in the church and community. My granddaughter joined YESICAN in elementary school. She’s now in 9th grade and has a much better understanding of the college and career options available to her…the YESICAN Program turns no student away as long as they are eager to learn new things. No matter what reading or math level a student is when they come into the Program they are shown various college and career options. A key goal of the Program is to motivate students and help them find something interesting about school so they will not drop out. Without a doubt, I believe every church and community should support a Program like this…”

“…YESICAN has made an enormous impact on my family and in assisting us in preparing our daughters for college. We became involved in YESICAN seven years ago when my daughter was a junior in high school. During our initial meeting I explained that we needed assistance in preparing our daughters and our family was invited on the first of many college tours. It was during that first college tour that we realized how ill prepared we were for our daughter to attend college in two years. Some of the challenges we faced were understanding and preparing for the SAT, finding and applying for scholarships and simply applying to interested colleges and universities…With the assistance of YESICAN, my oldest daughter has graduated from North Carolina A & T State University with a degree in Biology and she has just started graduate school at A & T! The knowledge gained through our experience with YESICAN has better prepared us to assist our second daughter who began her involvement with YESICAN in middle school. YESICAN has played a very integral part in the success of our daughters thus far. The knowledge and exposure gained from this Program is invaluable in assisting families and students for life after high school. I would highly recommend YESICAN to any parent or guardian responsible for the well being of our youth and that they get involved early…”
